We begin a Lenten study of African American spirituals on Feb. 22 with a screening of the film "I Can Tell the World," a documentary about The Spirituals Project, a Denver-based interracial choir committed to the preservation and performance of music born in slavery. We'll be joined that evening by the directors Larry Bograd and Colleen Hubbard.
On subsequent Thursdays, music director Allison Olsson will lead us into a deeper appreciation of the songs and the stories they tell. Dr. Arthur C. Jones, professor emeritus of music at the University of Denver and the founder of The Spirituals Project, will join us one evening. In addition, Allison's son, John Olsson, an African drum and dance leader, will join us for a class connecting African-origin music to spirituals as they developed.
